WMEA Encoding Guide

Only 4 steps you need to get WMEA to work.

1. Recommended Codecs:

For MPEG-2 files (.ts / .mpg / .vob)
Install Elecard MPEG-2 3.0 Decoder & Streaming Pack.
Tip: recommend Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility for configuring MPEG-2 decoder.

For AC3 audio content
Install AC3Filter (1.11 tested).
Tip: Configured output mode of AC3Filter for 3/2+SW or other multi-channel setting

For MPEG-4 files (.avi)
Install FFdshow (build 20060810 tested).

For Real Media files (.ra / .rm. / rmvb)
Install Real Alternative.

For QuickTime files (.mov / .hdmov / .qt / .3gp)
Install QuickTime Alternative (1.78 tested).

For MKV files (.mkv)
Install Matroska Pack.

These codecs will make your source files can be played by Windows Media Player.

2. Add your files to WMEA job list or drag them into the list.

3. Set encoding settings.
Tip: using 1pass encoding mode for AC3 audio content(CBR-1Pass, VBR-Quality).If you are using 2pass encoding mode (CBR-2Pass, VBR-ABR, VBR-PBR) for AC3 audio content, the encoding process will stuck and the size of output file will keep 6K bytes.

4. Start your encoding job.

If you still have no luck with WMEA, try to do:
1. Uninstall all your codec packs, clear up system registry. Make sure you have no codec conflict problems.
2. Install mentioned decoders & WMEA.
3. Try again.

FAQ

Q: What is WMEA?
A: WMEA is an encoding interface like WME app/ WMcmd.vbs. As a result of based on Windows Media SDK, it produces 100% compatible Windows Media files for users.

Q: Why can't I use two-pass encoding?
A: Two-pass encoding is not available for broadcasts, sessions that use quality-based VBR encoding, screen captures, or multisource sessions.

Q: Why do I get the error message "The input media format is invalid" ?
A: This error message means there is a conflict between the input media format (the output mode of your filter / decoder) and WMEA's encoding settings. Make sure the output mode setting of your audio filter / decoder is 6 / 8 channels when you encode mulit-channel WMV / WMA.

Q: I'm having issues here because the movies that I encoded without resizing aren't playing correctly on my XBox360, but that actually seems to be because the XBox360 is not respecting the PAR values in the WMV header, it doesn't seem to know what to do with them.
A: "Anamorphic content with nonsquare pixels is currently unsupported on Xbox 360 console, and will be displayed as if the pixels were square. If you want to play such content on your console, it is recommended that you re-encode the content in a square pixel format." Thanks to Allan Strydom.

Encode EVO to WMVHD

Recently, an user mailed us that he had some problems when he was trying to encode some EVO files to WMVHD using WMEA. So, we did some tests after that, then we've got 2 methods to do this, first in his way, second in our way.

First is more complex, WinDVD8, EVODemux, GraphEdit, Avisynth2.57 and WMEA is needed.
1. Demux EVO to mpv & mpa
2. Using GraphEdit make two filter graphs, write 2 Avisynth script.
3. Make sure WMP can play your 2 avs files, then load separate video & audio avs to WMEA (Using 'Add' -> 'Source'), start encoding job.

Second is easier, WinDVD8, EVODemux, Elecard MPEG-2 Decode Pack 3.0, AC3filter1.11 and WMEA is needed.
1. Demux EVO to mpv & mpa
2. Make sure your mpv & mpa can be played by WMP correctly, then load mpv & mpa to WMEA (Using 'Add' -> 'Source'), start encoding job.

This test passed on WinXP SP2 + WMP11.

Encoding speed / quality control and encode WMV with subtitle

Happy new year! For the first post of 2007, I like to add a example avs script to show how to encode a wmv with subtitle and clarity to the encoding speed / quality setting that you are probably already using.

There are 3 factors that we need to take in considerations for faster encoding :
1). Using plenty target bit rate (based on bit rate encoding) or lower video quality (based on quality encoding). Both of them result in easier to encoding our media files.

2). Using faster encoding setting for Performance of WMEA. It will significantly increase encoding speed and reduce a little video image quality that we can't see.

3). Using faster CPU, RAM and DISK. WMEA supports mulit-core CPU.

To encode WMV with subtitles:
1). Make sure you have installed avisynth 2.5 on your PC.

2). Edit a avs script file named like "example.avs".

3). Inputs lines below:
